After a Rebrand, BBGIRLS Are Back As K-Pop’s Reigning Summer Queens
The summer queens are back. This week, BBGIRLS, formerly known as Brave Girls, released “ONE MORE TIME”, their first single album together after rebranding from their original group Brave Girls.
I was curious how a rebranding of Brave Girls would sound. I’ve been a huge fan of theirs since 2020 when “Rollin’” crashed through to viral success. The runaway smash caught everyone by surprise – most incredibly, the members who were on the verge of disbanding when the song hit number one on the Korean charts. Since then, BBGIRLS have worked hard to retool their success. Last year, I saw and reviewed Brave Girls’ incredible first North American tour. Their performance convinced me that they have always been a cut above many acts in K-Pop just from sheer determination and talent.
Their music is so high spirited and distinctive in no small part due to Brave Brothers production. But the members have always been the ones to put the stamp on making a great song incredible: Think of Minyoung’s skyscraper heights in “Rollin’” or “High Heels” or the way you want to absoltuey shout the lyrics of “Chi Mat Ba Ram” once the chorus hits. But with “ONE MORE TIME”, BB Girls proves the group is entirely capable of continuing the tradition of releasing absolute summer bangers.
For starters, the title track is phenomenal with a dizzying chorus that retains all of the magic of BBGIRLS’ previous release. But it also pushes, ever so slightly, what we’ve come to expect from the girls. “ONE MORE TIME” is an elegant and mature introduction to the group’s new chapter giving each member the opportunity to shine. “Lemonade”, is the second single on the EP, is similarly excellent.
“It's a special one as we all have participated in every step of the process to create something that shows all four of our colors,” Minyoung, BBGIRLS leader, said in a press statement.
BBGIRLS decision to stay together is due to the friendship of members MINYOUNG, YOUJOUNG, EUNJI and YUNA. The group has been smart in pivot awy from familar tactics, like only relying on their smash hit “Rollin’” to coast them through to more succes.(See: their bold choice to not include “Rollin’” in the signature song challenge of QUEENDOM 2, instead wanting to remind viewers that they are more than one song.) For the past three years, BBGIRLS have been vocal about their determination to create new music that stands on it’s own.
BBGIRLS’ new beginning is filled with nerves, but the girls are excited to hear resposnes from fans. “We are excited and nervous at the same time to see how our fans will feel about the new BBGIRLS,” EUNJI said in the same statement released to press. “But we believe that you will love it!”
“ONE MORE TIME” is available now on streaming services with a physical album released this week. The girls will also perform on the Korean variety show circuit this week with a looming question of whether a win will be possible. With a single as strong as “ONE MORE TIME”, it’s entirely possible.
