MUSTB Returns with a Mature Image in “La Señorita”
With summer winding down, do you need a little more heat?
Allow MUSTB to give you the soundtrack to soak in the last few days of summer with their new single album “La Señorita”. It’s a single that Soohyun, the group’s rapper, describes with “the catchphrase, ‘I’ll definitely make you mine.’”
“La Señorita” is the first album the group has released in two years and it’s one they are excited for Muffins, their fanbase, to hear. This week marks a very important time for MUSTB: It is their official comeback. There will be a physical album release, as well as a dance challenge that they will debut on TikTok. On September 14, the group performed their comeback stage at MBC “Show Champion”. To mark this comeback, their first since April, the group held a Zoom press conference, which I was honored to be invited to.
While MUSTB is still under the radar, their talent is exciting to witness. The group performed two songs at the press conference, held inside their dance studio: The title track “La Señorita”, which members Taegeon, Soohyun, and Sihoo participated in writing, and the b-side “All Day”. Dressed in matching all white outfits, my favorite being Doha’s look in a sleek white choker, the guys displayed an ease and sense of humor both in their answers and in their performance.
MUSTB debuted on January 21, 2019 with the song “i want u”. It’s a track that Soohyun explains, “You can hear our boyish charm but as you get older, you rebel against rules.” He laughed for a moment. “That’s the vibe we’re going for now.”
“When I fall in love, I can’t snap out of it when I see you,” they sing in the infectious chorus of their debut song. “La Señorita” reflects who the group has become as they reach their mid-twenties. “Since our debut, we’ve turned into men,” Soohyun continues. “In the past we’d say, ‘Noona, I like you,” Soohyun said as he described the teenage crushes we experience as we grow up. “But now,” he explains with confidence, “You’re already mine at the end of a song. I think you can feel the sexiness or manliness from our performance.”
“I think you can feel our fiery manliness,” added Wooyeon, the sub-vocalist, more specifically. “We’ve never shown [this side] as strongly before.”
MUSTB are not rookies anymore, but gaining new fans is a priority for this comeback. They are, after all, in a genre that debuts new groups every week and like many of these groups, they are working hard to find their place and to create a sound that captures their distinct color or style.
“We really hope we can get new Muffins from this song,” Doha, the lead vocalist, stated. “We look forward to meeting them.”
I hope that they can win new fans with this song. As they’ve worked hard for three years, I hope that they know they are supported – and that eventually their talents will be recognized.
“We just went on our Latin American tour,” Taegeon, the group’s leader, explained. “La Señorita” is dedicated to the fans they met on this tour. “We’ll be touring more often and maybe next time we’ll feature a song from another country.”
But for now Taegeon is grateful for the international fans who have found them and support them. On September 30, they will perform in South Padre, Texas, and they know that this is a special opportunity to thank their fans in person. “As we’ve been traveling and meeting Muffins around the world, we received some great songs from them,” he said. “Our second song on the album, ‘All Day’ is how we feel towards our fans.”
In the meantime, Taegeon hopes you will support them and follow their activities throughout their comeback. “We have a lot of activities coming up and you can see MUSTB on several music shows,” he said. “So please check those out and support us.”
You can stream MUSTB’s new single album when it drops TOMORROW (September 19) or purchase it from your favorite local K-Pop store.
