Dreams Meet Reality in Devyn’s New Single “MOON”

“‘MOON’ represents the feeling of want, the yearning of something you don’t quite understand,” Devyn said about her new single.

On the sublime “MOON”, Devyn’s latest single, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter compares the mystery and beauty of the moon to her own dreams. The track poetically continues Devyn’s journey of reclaiming her autonomy and embracing her desires , which she first depicted in her debut single “WHO”. With every release since, Devyn has adeptly cataloged what it means to be a woman who is taking control of her narrative after years of trying to fit a mold that was never made for her. As she describes in “MOON”, sometimes this pursuit has left her feeling misunderstood. But Devyn’s work charts her path towards accepting herself, flaws and all.

Devyn’s strength as an artist is the command and presence she brings to her music. She’s a singer and visual artist who can adapt to new styles, no matter what is thrown her way. Look back at her previous single “U” where Devyn portrays a girl daydreaming in her bedroom to see her versatility. In comparison, Devyn looks almost otherworldly in the press photos that accompany “MOON”. Here, Devyn literally sparkles in glitter as she’s set in front of a shimmering backdrop of sea cliffs.

“MOON” represents reality meeting a dream,” Devyn told me as she prepared to release the single. “The never ending wonder of reaching the unknown; to exist feeling so passionate and stuck on this idea, this dream. It can leave you feeling misunderstood and isolated. Just like how the moon looks, staring at us each night.”

Devyn’s work asks for your patience. Sit with her music as it quietly unfolds and you’ll be rewarded with intelligent lyrics and lush production. “MOON” begins bare, with just a simple beat and Devyn’s voice, before it builds to reach a peak at the chorus. “I’m stuck on the moon,” she sings. “I wanna be floatin’/ Not going back again”.

“‘MOON’ represents the feeling of want, the yearning of something you don’t quite understand, where words can't begin to describe such complex emotions,” she explained to me. “To be drawn somewhere you’ve never been before, but so willing to go."

When we spoke in April, Devyn described “MOON” as her most “personal” track yet, and it’s evident in her exploration of what it means to be authentic. “I am such a strong advocate of being your unapologetic self and embracing all sides of who you are,” she told me in our first interview. “You may not like all of you, but there is beauty in the imperfections. It’s what separates you from everyone else.”

When I listen to “MOON '' I'm most moved by the visual of Devyn not leaving behind her dreams. For the past three years, Devyn has worked courageously to write music that sincerely articulates her insecurities and growth towards self-love. On “MOON”, she leans into describing what happens when we begin to see our dreams becoming reality.

“I’m stuck on the moon/ I can’t leave,” she sings, “because my dreams are my home.” For one transcendent moment, Devyn sounds lithe but powerful in her knowledge that much like the moon’s strength, her biggest transformation has only just begun.
